Choosing the Right Sailboat Plans
As a DIY boat builder you have most certainly contemplated in also building a sailboat, but since a sailboat is a bit more complicated then a motor boat how do you know what sailboat plans to pick? Not everybody has the same level of expertise or the same amount of money right? So in this article I will try to make somewhat of a guide on what to look for.
A sailboat can take longer to build compared to a normal boat because you also need to build and fit the actual sail on the boat.
If you are on a tight budget what you want is a sailboat plan that allows you to build your boat out of plywood. You can literally build a boat for $100 if you have the right plans. Don’t worry about sinking or something like that because you are going to use plywood, any decent plan will teach you how to reinforce so it doesn’t break very easily.
If you have a bit of a budget you might want to look into building a boat out of fiberglass or even buying a ready made boat building kit and just assemble it yourself. It does require more skill and more time to build but it general it will look better and possibly easier to sail.
Anyway, as a general rule you want to find plans that will show you how to build a sailboat in a step by step matter and in as much detail as possible. Forget about those vintage plans and stuff like that, those boats are good looking and have some heritage but I don’t recommend them to anyone that doesn’t have some extensive experience in building boat because from what I have seen most of them are not very detailed.
